3. Carl Wilhelm Strauss was born on 1 Oct 1825 in Danzig, East Prussia, died on 14 Sep 1915 in Mannum, South Australia, Australia at age 89, and was buried on 15 Sep 1915 in Mannum, South Australia, Australia.

Carl Wilhelm was born at 9pm on 1st of October 1825 by his birth entry in the Danzig Registry sponsors or godparents listed were Daniel Tinx a brass/metal worker from HeilegGeistgasse (Holy Ghost Street) and Florentine Strauss spinster from Peterhargen in the Black Sea District (could she be an unmarried sister to Andreas Friedrich?).
Carl's residence record showed that he was a qualified locksmith/metalworker he was a protestant and on the 17th of November 1843 was living at 356 Reiter Grasse, Scharzes Meer (Black Sea District). He then moved back to his parents who were living at 598 Tischler Strasse on the 10/2/1846 in preparation to leave for Australia. He probably arrived as a young man with his parents from Bremen in 1846 and was naturalized on the 14th of February 1849 in Hindmarsh South Australia giving his occupation at that time as a labourer. He worked around the colony for awhile and it is said that he and his brothers went to the goldfields of Victoria to try their luck finding a little gold. He married and took up land near Mannum he purchased land from the government in the county of Sturt; Hd Finniss; Sect 175 an area of 183 acres for £1 an acre on the 26th of April 1873 it was composed of some natural Murray swamp land, some mallee and pine land which was quite hilly and very stony. Their first home was a pug and pine house built on the far end of the farm called the old plain. They lived in this house for many years, but eventually built a very good home on the Millindilla creek on the side of a hill facing the river flats and the Murray River in the distance. Throughout their time, dairying was the greater part of their income, some grain growing and beef cattle, but no sheep. This house built on the side of the hill is still lived at the present time and it is in a very good state of repair although the old farm is not now owned by any of the family, the present occupiers are very successful farmers with beef cattle in the flats and sheep and grain on the rises.

They were hard parents living a hard life, it was nothing for the three boys to be set picking up stones on Monday morning and then forgotten about until Saturday night. With the exception of Gustav, all the other members left home mainly because life was too severe for them. They were thrifty people and there was always sufficient money when it had to be spent. I suppose that all of the children have been reasonably successful in life and in the areas where they have settled, all have been well known and respected.

When in the early 1900's new land was opened up to the north, he decided to establish himself in the newly surveyed town called Rainbow he bought a block in the main street and established a store he and his wife Tine ran both stores for awhile and it was said that Dolph rode a pushbike between the two. As time went by they sold the Warak store and moved to Rainbow building a house and expanding the business. Dolph was a shrewd businessman and his business interest expanded in owning farms in the local area. Dolph seems to have encouraged two of his brothers and his younger sister Addie to move from South Australia to the Dimboola, Rainbow area. Mannum, February 8.
A storm of cyclonic violence passed over between here and Pellaring Flat yesterday. Two young men, named William, and Theodor Strauss, were returning home in a wagon, and when within five chains from home a tree was blown on the wagon, and crushed the unfortunate young men. They were found later, the elder, Theodor, being dead, while William was severely crushed, his leg being broken, but there is every hope of his recovery under the care of Dr. E. E. Moule.
